Greener medicines: ENVIROMED featured by CORDIS

Pharmaceutical pollution is an emerging environmental challenge, with residues increasingly found in water systems and ecosystems. Addressing this issue requires rethinking how medicines are designed, produced and managed across their lifecycle.

The EU-funded ENVIROMED project was actively working for 42 months to close critical knowledge gaps by studying how pharmaceutical compounds behave in the environment and by developing tools for greener, more sustainable production. Its approach covered the full lifecycle – from manufacturing processes to environmental impact and toxicity assessment.

The project’s work has been recognised by the European Commission, with ENVIROMED selected for publication in the ‘Results in Brief’ section of the CORDIS website. The featured article highlights how innovative methods and digital tools can support the development of more environmentally friendly medicines.
